Volunteer Opportunity – Emerging Leaders

“The next generation of philanthropic leaders,” Emerging Leaders is a professional network within the Greater Twin Cities United Way that promotes volunteerism, leadership and networking. Emerging Leaders is seeking members for a varity of Subcommittees.

Subcommittee Member Expectations:
- United Way donor
- Committee Term: 1 year, with the option to serve up to 3 consecutive terms.
- Must attend:

  • Five bi-monthly subcommittee meetings per year
  • Two Emerging Leader committee meetings per year
  • One volunteer event organized by another subcommittee member

- Additional time commitment required for:

  • Planning and attending assigned events
  • Communicating with Emerging Leader volunteers

Volunteer Subcommittee Member

Responsible for identifying and organizing opportunities for young professionals to engage in meaningful volunteer activities at United Way funded organizations. An organizational component will be included whenever possible.

Responsibilities
- Assist in the planning of monthly EL volunteer events
- Assist with identifying at least three volunteer events a month to be hosted by the EL group-through United Way – Caring Connection and other sources. Try to secure six months ahead of time (if possible).
- Assume responsibility and facilitate either an ad hoc or standard monthly events
- Solicit feedback from committee members and other Emerging Leaders regarding potential volunteer opportunities
- Actively participate in any other EL events – networking, etc.
- Touch base with Emerging Leaders at events to cultivate relationships, encourage participation, obtain feedback, etc.

Leadership and Education Subcommittee

Responsible for identifying strategies and opportunities to build awareness among young professionals in our community around focus areas/community goals of United Way and the work of the Emerging Leaders Program, especially how our investment impacts the focus areas/community goals. Responsible for the planning and sponsorship of all educational events. An individual from this committee will represent EL Program on the Donor Continuum Advisory Committee.

Primary Responsibilities
- Assist in the planning of quarterly EL leadership and development training events
- Participate in brainstorming and help facilitate innovative leadership events
- Assume responsibility and facilitate a minimum of one leadership training per year
- Send event specifics to participating attendees before the event
- Confirm dates and times with the agency
- Attend event
- Send thank you via email after event is completed which includes information about future Emerging Leader events
- Connect with Emerging Leaders at events to cultivate relationships, encourage participation, obtain feedback, etc.
- Participate in other EL volunteer and networking events

Campaign Subcommittee

Responsible for developing fundraising and engagement strategies for the Emerging Leaders segment that can be implemented within company campaigns. They will advise United Way on what motivates this group to give and help create strategies to reach fundraising, donor acquisition and retention goals.

Primary Responsibilities
- Become familiar with United Way’s Agenda for Lasting Change, Emerging Leaders program and key messages so as to articulate the program’s focus and membership benefits.
- Develop measurable goals and targeted strategies to promote Emerging Leaders through the company campaign to increase employee giving and participation in employees ages 20-40.
- Implement strategies and monitor progress to ensure goal attainment.
- Identify current donors and prospects for Emerging Leaders program.
- Champion United Way within workplace campaign and implement Emerging Leader campaign best practices.
- Promote external Emerging Leaders events (i.e. Leadership Speaker Series, Wine Tasting, volunteer events) within your company.
- Select 3-5 key events in which to participate.
- Serve as a United Way ambassador in communications and marketing materials.
- Make a personal gift to United Way.
- Review, support, and comply with United Way’s ethics policy.

Awareness Subcommittee

Responsible for identifying strategies and opportunities to build awareness of Emerging Leaders among young professionals in our community. Work with committees to identify creative promotional opportunities for individual events. Work with United Way on identifying new and innovative ways to promote United Way Emerging Leaders Program.

Primary Responsibilities
- Identify external strategies and opportunities to build awareness of Emerging Leaders among young professionals in our community
- Work with committees to identify creative promotional opportunities for individual events
- Work with United Way to identify new and innovative ways to promote United Way Emerging Leaders Program.
- Identify key media outlets and recommend placement of advertising and editorial content to leverage limited EL budget
- Help identify key strategies to connect with target market of young professionals
