Volunteer Opportunity – Bolder Options

Bolder Options is a comprehensive mentoring program focusing on healthy youth development. Bolder Options engages youth (ages 10-14) and mentors in physical health practice, academic tutoring, goal setting, life skills meetings, and volunteerism to build self-esteem, garner a trusting relationship with a supportive adult, and to enable young people to reach their full potential.

Volunteer Tutor

The tutoring program will provide math, reading and experiential academic enrichment for students falling behind in school. We provide transportation for students from Nellie Stone Johnson and Jefferson Community Middle School to our Minneapolis office where we provide a 2-3 hour program of one-to-one tutoring, group tutoring and experiential learning activities.

Major Responsibilities:
- Working closely with youth in reading and math
- Helping youth work through problems through encouragement

Qualifications:
Required
- A desire to work with youth ages 10-14
- Academic knowledge through eighth grade
- Commitment to showing up Tuesdays and/or Thursdays from 3:00pm – 6:30pm OR 3:00pm-4:30pm Or 4:30pm-6:00pm for at least a semester or the full academic year (Sept. – May )
- Pass criminal background check
- Attend a one session training prior to start date

- Willingness to be open to new things
- Willingness to learn from youth

Time Commitment: 1.5 – 6 hours a week

Mentor Position

Bolder Options is a one-on-one mentoring program. We use running and biking, academic goal setting, and volunteerism to build self-esteem and encourage healthy habits in 10-14 year old youth. Bolder Options fosters caring relationships through a series of races, goal setting activities and healthy habits meetings/events.

Qualifications:
- Minimum age of 21 years
- Ability to commit to one youth for one year
- Access to phone and reliable transportation
- Acceptable driving record and background check as defined by screening policy
- Maintenance of current auto insurance
- Ability to translate skills and lessons learned through physical activity and goal-setting into everyday life
- Understand and agree to Bolder Options Volunteer Policies
- Patience with various youth abilities and social skills
- Respect confidentiality of youth and families
- Willingness to participate in running and/or cycling activities (expertise NOT required)

Responsibilities:
- Complete Application Process
- Commit to a one year match with one youth, meeting 2-4 hours a week
- Meet Program Coordinator, youth and youth’s family in their home for the formal match introduction
- Take mentee to pick out a pair of running shoes or a bike to use (provided by Bolder Options)
- Attend Mentor Follow-Up Training within 4 months of match date
- Attend program meetings and group activities with your mentee
- Complete a minimum of 3 cycling or running events with mentee
- Log volunteer hours online once a month
- Attend graduation ceremony at the end of the one-year match

- Provide 3 personal references
- Personal interview with Volunteer Coordinator
- Criminal and motor vehicle record check
- New Mentor Orientation
- Mentor acceptance or rejection
