About the Wish Ball:
The Wish Ball is the annual black tie gala event benefiting the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Minnesota, which will take place on March 3rd, 2012. This year’s goal is to raise $657,000 to grant the wishes of Minnesota children! Planning committees are absolutely crucial to the success of the event. We are in particular need of volunteers to participate on the Auction, Scoreboard, Wine, and Sponsorship committees. To express interest in a particular committee and learn more details, please contact Ann Ditzler at aditzler@wishmn.org.

Auction Committee
The members of the Auction Committee will brainstorm, create, and solicit for exceptional packages to be featured in the Live and Silent Auctions. Members will meet monthly and will also assist with the marketing and promotion of the items, as well as coordinating logistics of item pick up.

Scoreboard Committee
Do you have a passion for sporting events? Consider joining the Scoreboard Committee! Scoreboard Committee members will seek out and obtain donated tickets to local sporting events. Tickets will be used in the “Scoreboard” game of chance at the Wish Ball – guests will have the chance to donate $125 and will receive two tickets in return, ranging in value from $100-300+. Members will meet monthly.

Wine Committee
Join the wine committee and use your love of wine to help grant wishes! Members will obtain 150 high end bottles of wine ($50 minimum each) to be used for the “Wine Pull” at the Wish Ball. Guests who choose to participate in the Wine Pull, donate $50 and receive a bottle or package of bottles of wine, ranging in value from $50-$750+. The committee will meet at least monthly.

Sponsorship Committee
The committee hopes to raise over $400,000 for wish children throughout the state through sponsorships! Members will develop and implement 30 contacts for sales of Wish Ball sponsorship, solicit various level donors, develop a recognition plan for sponsors/donors, and work with the marketing/PR team to ensure all sponsors are recognized appropriately. The committee will meet at least monthly.

Second Harvest Heartland, the Upper Midwest’s largest hunger-relief organization, works to reinvent hunger relief through leadership and innovation so as to help those who are hungry today and provide the means for those who are hungry to be fed tomorrow. Pioneering partnerships and programs have paved the way for Second Harvest Heartland to distribute nearly 60 million pounds of grocery products this year to hungry seniors, families and children through nearly 1,000 non-profit member agencies and programs serving 59 counties in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. For more information, visit www.2harvest.org.

Meals for Minds

1 in 8 Minnesota children lives at risk of hunger. To help provide for children in need, the Target Meals for Minds program and Second Harvest Heartland join together to distribute food to students and families through mobile food pantries in Minneapolis and St. Paul elementary schools.

During the event, volunteers help set up a mobile food pantry by sorting and pre-bagging produce and stocking tables with food so the room is ready when families arrive. Volunteers will then distribute items, such as fresh fruits and vegetables, dairy, bread and meat, directly to students and families.

The events take place once per month in the late afternoon or evening with a time commitment of about 3 hours. This is a very meaningful opportunity to provide food to those who need it most.

Upcoming Dates:
• Nellie Stone Johnson Elementary (807 27th Avenue North, MPLS, 55411) on Tuesday, Oct. 18th from 5 – 7:30 pm
• Jackson Elementary (427 Edmund Avenue, St. Paul, 55103) Oct. 27th from 5:30 – 8:00 pm

Minneapolis Service Center

Volunteers at our Minneapolis facility work in groups to sort and re-package donated food such as pinto beans, rice, cereal, tortillas or pasta. This food is then made available for our local partner food shelves, soup kitchens and homeless shelters. Shifts for the Service Center are available weekdays from 9am – 12pm and from 1 – 3 pm, and on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5 – 7 pm. Volunteering at our Service Center is a fun and convenient experience for both groups and individuals.

Farmer’s Market

Each Sunday from mid-July through October, we collect surplus produce from vendors at the Minneapolis Farmers Market. There are two ways to volunteer: during the morning volunteers focus on encouraging shoppers to donate through outreach and education, and the afternoon shift focuses on produce collection. In 2010, over 1,000 volunteers collected more than 50 tons of fresh food at the Farmers Market!

Registration Information
Volunteers can register online by visiting Second Harvest’s website at www.2harvest.org/volunteer. Kris Jensen, Volunteer Coordinator, is available to answer questions and provide scheduling assistance by phone at 651-216-3761 or email at kjensen@2harvest.org.

The YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and girls, and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. This mission is our promise to the future of Minneapolis.

The YWCA of Minneapolis was founded in 1891 to work towards the health and empowerment of women and girls. In the 1940’s, almost 10 years before the start of the Civil Rights movement, the YWCA integrated its Board of Directors and facilities and began work on racial justice issues of that time. Since the ‘60’s and ‘70’s, our focus has been on the needs of the inner city: serving youth in Minneapolis Public Schools, supporting low-income families with high-quality early childhood education, and offering inclusive health & fitness opportunities in the urban core. Today, we continue our 120 year tradition of social justice through work on wellness, youth and child development, and racial justice.

2010 was a new beginning for LEAD. It was the start of an entirely new group of young professionals (Bridget Ulrich, Elizabeth Larson, Jason Lima, Jon Applebaum, Lan Freitag, Mansi Bhandari, Michelle Sotak, Peter Prudden) that were tasked from the founding board members to carry on LEAD’s mission of engaging young professionals in the charitable and philanthropic communities of the Twin Cities. Click here to watch a short video on LEAD.

One of the first tasks as a newly formed board was to increase the group’s online presence. With the help of Martin Ashal, LEAD launched a new website in March. With the new look, latest features and fresh information on what LEAD does, there was an increase of 300% in web traffic. LEAD also increased its Facebook presence to 964 fans and over 400 Twitter followers.

In April, LEAD had the first charitable benefit of the year. LEAD proudly hosted The Green Party – a benefit for Great River Greening, the first private event at the newly minted Metropolitan Club at Target Field. More than 400 attendees helped to raise $7,000 to help double Great River Greening’s work this year.

In June, LEAD hosted the first event of its kind. PhilanthroFair – a volunteer fair catered for young professionals looking for volunteer opportunities (board positions or skill based volunteering). It featured over 30 volunteer opportunities from nine Twin Cities nonprofits (pictured right). Prior to the event, MAP for Nonprofits had a 30-minute Mini Board Boot Camp to explain board expectations and helped individuals formulate questions to ask the nonprofits. The attendance goal was surpassed with over 130 individuals.

Later in July, LEAD hosted a BOOM Benefit for Smile Network International. Held at a private residence with a spacious terrace overlooking the Mississippi River, it offered a spectacular view of the Aquatennial Fireworks show. The 150 attendees, helped to raise over $8,000 to improve the lives of 16 children in need of a healthier and happier smile.

During the month of July, LEAD welcomed five new directors to their board – Ellora Batacharya, Jonathan Wilson, Kristin Gast, Mara Hughes, Michael Will, and Peter Wagner. The positions were added to help expand the capacity and work of LEAD.

In September, LEAD partnered with the Citizen’s League and BringMeTheNews to host Candidate Conversation- live, interactive debate between Minnesota gubernatorial candidates Mark Dayton, Tom Emmer and Tom Horner. Attendees filled the Pantages Theater to hear about issues like the economy, education, and how the MN Candidate’s planned to address them as Governor. Attendees also were encouraged to tweet throughout the night resulting in #debateMN as the #1 Twitter trend.

Following the success of PhilanthroFair, LEAD hosted PhilanthoFair II in October. This event featured 45 volunteer opportunities at 11 Twin Cities nonprofit to over 150 attendees.

In November, LEAD partnered with United Way Emerging Leaders to co-sponsor a Board Boot Camp. Over 50 attendees took the first step in creating a meaningful relationship within their community and learned about some of the elements it takes to becoming a board member.

The holiday season tends to be a time of giving thanks. We at LEAD are thankful for many things, including your interest and support for our organization. We hope that you had a wonderful year and look forward to seeing you in 2011.

Warm Wishes,

The LEAD Project Board of Directors

A special thank you to all our generous partners and friends that helped us make 2010 successful:
