LEAD’s Mission and History

Our Mission

The Leadership Emergence and Development Project (LEAD) is a nonprofit organization that engages young professionals in the charitable and philanthropic communities of the Twin Cities.

LEAD accomplishes this mission by:

  • Sponsoring social benefits in partnership with charitable organizations in the Twin Cities.
  • Developing a culture of philanthropy and sense of community responsibility among young professionals.
  • Working with the charitable organizations to help them identify young leaders for leadership positions.

In 2009, a new board was elected to carry LEAD’s mission even further.  These individuals are working on forming an even stronger connection between LEAD, young professionals, and nonprofit organizations. Meet the New Board.

Our History

In 2006, Matthew Hemsley founded The Leadership Emergence and Development Project (LEAD) with the goal of making philanthropy accessible to young professionals in the Twin Cities. Dedicated to making a difference, Matthew and nine other young professionals focused on connecting their peers with dynamic nonprofit organizations. Events held at unique venues throughout the Twin Cities allowed LEAD to raise funds and awareness for local nonprofits, and solicit volunteers. From 2006 – 2009, LEAD has hosted events for various nonprofit organizations, including Bolder Options, Fresh Energy, Free Arts Minnesota, and Children’s Defense Fund. During that time, LEAD also concentrated on leadership education through training opportunities and corporate roundtable events. Since 2006, LEAD has formed a group of over 3,000 young professionals ready to LEAD!
